If you have never been to a Yoga class it can be intimidating. What do you wear? What equipment should you bring, if any?

Knowing what to wear and bring to a Yoga class can be a struggle. But fear not young Yogi, read on to see my top picks for yoga wear, mats & props!

What to Wear to Yoga

Sports Bra

I love a sports bra that has a higher neckline and gives good support, no worries about the Girls making an appearance in downward facing dog! Here are a few of my favourites.

PS: They come in fun colours too, not just black!

Quality Leggings

Quality leggings make a HUGE difference in your workout. I spent years and lots of money on less than perfect leggings and they all left me wanting more. You want them comfortable and flexible to flow through all of your movements without having to tug and pull at them every time you come back to Tadasana. Investing in a great pair of leggings, or two, not only will up your flow game but help your bank account too. Comfort and fit are key in a good quality pair of yoga pants.

Yoga Tank Top

It is a form-fitting tank top that does not creep up my waist and it covers all the right places is great for any workout or yoga class. While a nice flowy tank that can be tied in the front, sides or back is also a nice alternative. You want to be comfortable in all poses, and a tank that doesn't move around while your flowing or during a downward dog.

Check out a few of my favs to keep you covered up and stylish.

Athletic Jacket or Sweater

I am always cold so I like to layer. I always carry a jacket or a lightweight and loose-fitting long sleeve top with me to wear over my workout clothes. The studio could be chilly or you may want it for Savasana. Also, having a top to through over your workout clothes elevates it and now you can run your errands! Athleisure wear at its finest. Check out some of my favourites below.

Now that we have you dressed and ready for class, what should you bring with you?

What to bring with you to Yoga:

Yoga Mat

If it’s your first time, you might not have a Yoga mat. The yoga studio may have some to borrow, but I always feel more comfortable using my own (gross germs!). Ask any Yogi and they will have their favourite mat. One size doesn't fit all! The length and thickness are key to consider when looking for a yoga mat. As well as grip & material it is made from.

Here are the 2 that I have used for YEARS and LOVE!!!

Yoga Towel or Blanket

A towel or blanket is a great prop to have. Put it under your knees for support, roll it up for restorative poses or cover yourself in Savasana. You may want a towel if you sweat a lot or take a hot yoga class. Also great to wrap yourself up with for meditation. Here are a few of my favourites.

Water

About 70 percent of the human body is made up of water! Staying hydrated no matter what exercise you are participating in is key to a healthy & happy body. I am VERY big on using reusable water bottles and with so many cute and colourful ones now, why not bring your own water!

Props

A yoga block and strap are great props to have no matter your Yogi level! I recently had the honour of guest posting on The Sankalpal Project Community Blog about all things Yoga Blocks, so check it out here! The one thing I will say about Yoga blocks is but 2 and buy quality! Blocks bring the floor up to you and your weight is on them. The last thing you want is to have them give when they are there to support you! A strap is great as it is an extension of your arms. Great for hamstring and shoulder stretches as well as restorative poses. Get one with a buckle and at least 8ft long to help support and enhance your practice. Here are my picks!

There you have it, Yogis! My top yoga wear and props to get you started in Yoga. Of course, you do not NEED these items. Yoga is all about you, your body & breath, but these items can assist you in your practice.

Yoga is YOUR practice, YOUR time, YOUR journey. Let it be what YOU need it to be. Step on your mat and Let it all Go.
